"Contact 1609," by Courtney M. Leonard
2009

"Contact 1609," created by Courtney M. Leonard is an intricate piece crafted of clay into one-inch shells on canvas. When the observer pulls their view back, they can find that the coloration of these shells map out New York State. Leonard is one of the seven artists featured in the Staten Island Museum's exhibition, CONTACT: 1609. This exhibit celebrates the quadricentennial of Henry Hudson's expedition to the New York Harbor and his contact with the Lenape Indians.
